Student software keeps treating university like a collection of assignments. A useful personal agent has to understand the life wrapped around them.
Student technology has spent years asking the same narrow question. How can we help students do more academic work, faster?
The result is predictable. Better flashcards. Faster notes. Cleaner task lists. More ways to summarise the reading you may no longer have time to read.
Some of those tools are useful. None of them describes student life.
An assignment is rarely difficult only because of the assignment. It is difficult because the deadline moved, the marking guidance is buried in a portal, your group cannot agree on a time, your shift ends late, the train is delayed and the friend you have not seen in two weeks is finally free tonight.
Life does not arrive in categories
Software likes categories because categories make neat products. Calendar. Notes. Messages. Learning. Travel. Money.
Your life ignores the borders. The seminar room change affects when you need to leave. Leaving earlier affects the call you promised your mum. The call affects the time you planned to edit the application. The application matters because somebody sent you an opportunity in a group chat three days ago.
A real personal agent has to understand the thread. Otherwise, it is one more place where you maintain a simplified copy of your life.
The product should disappear into the day
Byte begins by text because text is already where plans change. You should be able to say what happened in the same language you would use with a friend. No setup ritual. No dashboard required before the help begins.
Over time, Byte will be available by call, app, browser and the other places where your life already happens. Those are not separate products competing for your attention. They are different doors into the same context.
The measure is not how long you spend inside Byte. It is how much more present you can be outside it.
The best student technology should give university back to the student.
More than a degree
We are building Byte for students who want more from these years. More does not mean a longer task list. It means more room for the project, the person, the city, the chance and the strange idea that might become important later.
Academics remain a major part of that life. Byte should help you do serious work and meet serious commitments. It should also understand why you are doing them, and protect the rest of the person doing the work.
You do not need another study tool. You need more of university to feel possible at once.
